Read more to find out about kalnirnay, it's importance and celebration. Kalnirnay celebrated every year on the 13th day of the month Asoj (Marathi Calendar). It is also observed as a day of mourning as the god Datta’s death anniversary falls on this day. In fact, “Kalnirnay” literally means the “month of the Lord’s death” or “Month of God’s Mourning”. It is a very auspicious date and people observe fast for a day and visit temples to pay their respects to God Datta. The story of Kalnirnay is connected with that of all other festivals connected to different gods and goddesses. The most popular belief about the beginning of our universe is that all gods were moved by one desire –the creation of human beings to enjoy their creations. Each god accordingly created something in his own way. Brahma created the earth; Vishnu created the sky; Shiva created the planets; Yamai (Goddess of Death) created humans. All were different in their shapes and forms so they couldn’t be accommodated in any one place. So, Datta came forward to attempt a reconciliation of all gods. He suggested that all gods should come together to create human beings out of different materials using their own energies . As the deities were all different there wouldn’t be any similarity between humans created by them. All gods readily agreed to this proposal. Then Datta appointed the month of his death as the beginning date of Kalnirnay for all deities. Brahma worshipped the earth, Vishnu worshipped the sky, Shiva worshiped the planets and Yamai worshipped humans to create them. Who brought what to the Kalnirnay festival? Kalnirnay celebrations are celebrated all over Maharashtra. It is a very joyful occasion, though people observe fast for one day. During this time, people visit temples to pay their respects to god Datta. People also worship cattle since it is believed that they are the incarnation of god Datta . It is believed that on this day “Gokul (the abode of Lord Krishna) is transferred from earth to heaven by lord Krishna”. On this day children wear traditional outfits and adorn themselves with flowers and garlands in the morning. cfa1e77820
