It is the sequel to the 2006 box office hit Don: The Chase Begins Again. Originally scheduled for release on 26 December 2012, it was released worldwide on 25 December 2012. The story of the film begins with Sunny (Abhay Deol), who has left India to live in London with his workaholic journalist girlfriend Aditi (Konkona Sen Sharma). He returns to Mumbai for his father's funeral. There he reconnects with a childhood friend of his, Pawan (Shahid Kapoor), and they get involved in a dangerous spy plot involving their neigbours, the Khans. Sunny's old friends from the Indian intelligence services get involved. In the midst of all these shenanigans is Sunny's new girlfriend, Monali (Sonakshi Sinha), who is in love with him.On 24 September 2013, it was announced that Farhan Akhtar would direct Don 2 in Hindi after his critically acclaimed drama "Piku" was unable to release due to creative differences between its creative team and an uncooperative producer. The film was shot in London and Mumbai. Rumours about the filming locations of the movie were revealed by Farhan Akhtar on his Twitter account. According to Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut "Piku", the film's shooting began in October 2012. However it was delayed due to financial issues while Pawan Chopra who directed the original Don films, did not want to direct a sequel even though he directed two films after it, hence Farhan Akhtar took over directing duties of Don 2. He directed the film with the assistance of his co-writer Omar Lyle who assisted him with writing scripts for "Don 2" and "Piku". The film's lead actor Abhay Deol who has worked with Farhan in "Luck By Chance" and "Rock On!!" was announced to be revisiting his role of Don. After the announcement, Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha were announced as a part of the cast for their roles as Pawan Chopra and Monali Desai respectively. In December 2012, Saif Ali Khan was cast to do a special appearance in this film although he did not appear in the theatrical version of the movie. In March 2013 it was announced that Rab Nawaz's character from the original film would be replaced by Raza Murad's character from the first part though not seen on-screen. The film was shot in London but no filming locations were revealed by Farhan Akhtar. The film's title "Don 2" was chosen by producer Yash Raj Films. The film's trailer came out on 24 January 2013. The first look posters of the movie were launched on 12 January 2013. The first trailer of the movie was released on 25 December 2012. It was also released at IMAX theaters worldwide.
