His first movie as an adult was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), directed by Mansoor Khan. He became one of the main stars of Bollywood in 1988 with two consecutive superhits: QSQT and Raakh (1989). This was followed by another hit, Betaab (1991). He played a dual role in his next movie, Hum Tum (1993). He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this film. In 1995 he starred in Lagaan, which was screened at the Oscars and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He has since then appeared in several hits such as Paapi (1997), Kya Kehna (1999), Lagaan 2: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) and Dangal (2016).
